Ruth Saffir is a cellist, Dalcroze proponent, and a lecturer at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, University of Adelaide. She studied in Melbourne with Valerie Awburn, in Adelaide with James Whitehead, in Hobart with Sela Trau and Jan Sedivka and in London with Joan Dickson. She has performed numerous solo and chamber recitals and in the Tasmanian and Adelaide Symphony Orchestras.
With the Petra String Quartet and the Olinda Piano Trio, resident at the Tasmanian Conservatorium, she toured throughout the state and to all eastern capital cities. As a lecturer at the Flinders Street School of Music, Adelaide Institute of TAFE, she was a member of the Chamber Players of South Australia, which led to numerous recitals, including many performances of contemporary works. She is currently a member of the Sirrah String Trio.
With a passionate interest in teaching, she has taught cello to students of all ages, and pedagogy has been a particular focus of her lecturing. Her interest in and study of Dalcroze Eurhythmics has led to the development of teaching strategies incorporating music through movement into cello classes.
Saffir is an AMEB examiner, has adjudicated at eisteddfods in Adelaide and Hobart and has held workshops for teachers through the Dalcroze Society of SA, the Australian Strings Association (AUSTA), the AMEB, the Tasmanian Music Teachers' Association and the SA chapter of ANATS.
