ASA Junior Summer School
Australian String Academy

The Junior Summer School is an expectional opportunity for students at AMEB grade 5-8 level or equivalent. With a faculty headed by the distinguished Professor Peter Zhang, students can participate in private lessons, intensive group classes, master classes, chamber music training and more in a two-week intensive course which will dramatically improve their technique and musicality.

The junior students are also able to sit in on all senior student events including master classes, faculty concerts and workshops, meaning they can learn from the senior students and be inspired by the overseas guest tutors and senior faculty.

The Junior Summer school grew out of ASA's first Summer Program in 2005, where Professor Zhang not only taught the senior students, but also gave special teaching for junior students, from both Australia and Asia. In 2006 the Academy expanded this by adding the Intensive Group Lessons, in which students could learn in a workshop/master class situation, learning from each other under the direction of distinguished pedagogues.

The inspiring program is designed by SheauFang Low who is the Director.

Peter Zhang's new teaching method for young violinists

Details for 2009 Junior Summer School
Date: 10-24 January 2009
Venue: Sydney Conservatorium of Music

In 2009 ASA is offering the Junior program to students on violin and cello. We have added an exciting component to the program for the first time, Dalcroze Eurhythmics headed by Dalcroze authority Sandra Nash. The Dalcroze classes, or musicianship through movement, will focus on listening and moving so that aural perception of rhythm, pitch and phrasing is developed. The Dalcroze exercises develop the rhythmic sense and also spontaneity and the musical imagination. Group work will give opportunities to uncover expressive and dramatic qualities in musical forms, and improvisation will be incorporated so that students can explore creatively the elements experienced in movement. Students bring their instruments to these sessions and wear suitable clothing for movement.
